Same-Hour clearance finally a reality

Introducing… Check Truncation.

Kenyan check clearing procedure takes upto 4 days for inter-bank checks to clear.

From 2009, there has been an initiative to cut this to an hour. Max.

It is finally here. In less than a month, Inter-bank checks that will have a KBA (Kenya Bankers Association) watermark will clear in 15 minutes. Or less.

The 'UnKillable' Ubiquitous Network

There was a very thought-provoking discussion on Twitter today about the need to have a network with the following capabilities, in Kenya:
  • Independent – Not owned by an individual or corporate.
  • Ever-on. Means it cannot be turned off like the Internet was, in Egypt.
  • NSPOF – Means that it is formless and cannot be tampered with. Human compromises will not lead to network compromise.

This topic is a hot one on the net, especially at :

I would like to welcome bloggers, thinkers, humanitarian organizations, funders etc to discuss the feasibility of this.

A Kenya-wide network that is untouchable. Emergency-use network that is accessible via phone Data, SMS, Universal USSD, Dedicated Terminals, Always-on WiFi and any other methods.

I am sure iHub can give us space for this.
